Is There a Dating App for Ugly People?

Yes. The Ugly Bug Ball is a dating site for ugly people, plain people and anyone who wants personality to come first, and it runs in any phone browser and installs on your home screen like an app. Ugly Schmucks is the other dedicated option, and Hinge and Plenty of Fish give your words more weight than a pure swipe app.

In short

The short answer

There is a dating app for ugly people, and there is more than one way to date if you feel the big apps judge you on your face. The Ugly Bug Ball is built for exactly this: a dating site where ugly is a word you can use about yourself with a grin, profiles get read, and nobody needs to look like a model. It works on any phone through the browser and saves to your home screen, so in practice it is an ugly dating app without a download. The table below sets out the live options, checked on 13 October 2026.

The dedicated ugly dating sites

Two dedicated ugly dating sites were live when we checked. The Ugly Bug Ball has been running since 2010 and counts more than 2,000 members, chiefly in America and Britain; you can read whether it is legit and see what members get. Ugly Schmucks describes itself as an ugly dating community for people who prefer personality to appearance, and its members' forum was still active in October 2026. If you want a site where the whole point is that looks come second, these are where to start.

Mainstream apps that let personality count

If you would rather use a big app, some give your personality more room than others. Hinge pairs photos with written, voice or video prompt answers, and you begin a match by reacting to one specific picture or answer, which rewards a good line as much as a good face. Plenty of Fish, around since 2003, lets free members search and send messages and supports longer profiles. Both are part of Match Group. Our comparisons of The Ugly Bug Ball and Hinge and The Ugly Bug Ball and Plenty of Fish go into detail.

What about Tinder and Bumble?

Tinder is the best-known swipe app and is free to chat once two people like each other, but it is built on fast decisions about photos. Bumble, run by Bumble Inc., was famous for making women send the first message; since 11 August 2026 anyone in a match can send it, and the other person has 72 hours to reply. Both have strong verification, including Tinder's Face Check, now compulsory for new UK users. Both are photo-first. See The Ugly Bug Ball vs Tinder and The Ugly Bug Ball vs Bumble.

Why hiding the photo changes things

There is real evidence that putting looks second changes how people talk. In January 2013, OkCupid hid every profile picture on its site for seven hours. During that time, people replied to first messages 44% more often and conversations went deeper; when the photos came back, many of those conversations stopped. OkCupid published the experiment in 2014. It is one site's data about its own users, but it is a neat case for letting people talk before anyone judges a face.

How to choose

If you want a community where calling yourself ugly is a shared joke rather than a risk, choose a dedicated site such as The Ugly Bug Ball. If you want a bigger pool and you are happy to sell yourself in a photo and a line, Hinge or Plenty of Fish give you more room than a pure swipe app. Whatever you choose, use one clear, smiling photo, write specific detail in your profile and keep first chats on the platform.
